Australia’s use of cholesterol-lowering drugs has tripled in the last 10 years and is the highest in the developed world. Statin drugs are the most profitable drugs in the world and Lipitor is the best selling drug in history. This is despite only one or two people per hundred benefiting from taking a statin drug yet statins increase the likelihood of developing diabetes and have other side effects such as muscle weakness, memory loss, and, in rare cases, a potentially fatal condition called rhabdomyolysis, where muscles break down and cause kidney failure.
