SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and it involves harmful microbes invading the small intestine. These bacteria can damage the intestinal lining, reduce nutrient absorption (causing malabsorption), allow substances to transfer from the gut into the bloodstream, trigger immune responses (such as hayfever, sinus issues, etc) and cause other health problems.

Some of the common symptoms of SIBO include:

Bloating after eating

Abdominal discomfort, cramping or pain

Food sensitivities

Constipation or diarrhoea, or alternating constipation & diarrhoea

Joint pain

Sinus symptoms

Skin rashes

Respiratory symptoms

Possibly Iron, B12, folic acid, calcium and/or magnesium deficiency

Symptoms of IBS.

Symptoms of Leaky gut

If you suffer from a few of these symptoms, please consult me about a reliable, non-invasive test that specifically detects SIBO, and the appropriate treatment program if you are found to be suffering from this condition.

I would strongly recommend that you don’t leave SIBO untreated, or risk your health by self-medicating, because I’ve seen a number of cases over the years where clients have attempted to treat themselves, which has resulted in them suffering from really resistant forms of bacterial infections – which are much harder to treat!
When you have a resistant bacterial infection, the treatment program required is generally far longer, more complex and much more expensive. Not only that, having a resistant infection can compromise your health in so many ways.
It’s always best to treat these problems properly from the start.
Left untreated, SIBO may cause:

Malabsorption of monosaccharides and amino acids (carbohydrates and proteins).

Fermentation of disaccharides by bacteria causing hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulphate gasses.

These gasses themselves are damaging to the gut wall.

Malabsorption of vitamins (especially B12 and Folic acid).

Malabsorption of minerals (especially, iron, magnesium and calcium), increasing the likelihood of bone disorders and other health issues.

SIBO can cause leaky gut, with a damaged gut wall allowing larger particles to pass through, causing an immune response.

A range of other health problems.

If you feel you may be suffering from SIBO, please consult me about this condition so I can refer you for one of the most reliable tests available (as not all tests are equal!), and I can treat you with clinically-proven naturopathic medicines if necessary.
