IT’S NETTLE TIME!

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN!

Winter in Australia is when stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) grow and flower so instead of thinking about them as a weed – consider them as a valuable medicinal herb instead.

I made stinging nettle soup last night and I recommend you do too if you have some growing in your garden.

Stinging Nettle has some pretty amazing therapeutic properties. Nettles are anti-inflammatory (so they may help with arthritis, eczema and other inflammatory conditions); they are high in nutrients, especially iron and vitamin C, and recent research has found that they act as strong angiogenesis (anti-cancer) inhibitors*.

*Stinging nettles (Urtica dioica): Sesquiterpene lactone constituent potently inhibits NfKB.

HOW TO PREPARE

Harvest them (with gloves on) when they are flowering, which is now around the Adelaide Hills.

Wash them and chop the leaves and roots before adding them to a pot of home made vegetable soup that’s almost ready to serve.

Just simmer for a few minutes so they lose their ‘sting’ but don’t overcook them or they will lose their beneficial properties.

Warning: Some people may have an allergic reaction to nettles but this is rare.
