INCREASED RISK OF THYROID DISEASE WITH VITILIGO
Patients with vitiligo (a skin disease where skin pigmentation changes) are at increased risk of thyroid disease the first systematic review on the subject has found.
In a review of 48 studies published between 1968 and 2012, Dutch researchers found the risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) was more than twice as high in patients with vitiligo.
All of the nine studies that looked for thyroid antibodies found they were more than five times as likely in people with the skin disease, the authors wrote in the British Journal of Dermatology.
