THE CAUSES OF CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

FINALLY, the science is slowly catching up with naturopathic philosophies…….

‘Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Linked to Gut Dysbiosis’

Imbalance in gut microbiota could explain inflammatory symptoms present in chronic fatigue syndrome, say US researchers.

Their analysis of stool samples taken from 48 patients and 39 controls shows CFS patients had decreased bacterial diversity and an increase in pro-inflammatory bacteria such as proteobacteria compared with controls.

They also had significantly lower levels of anti-inflammatory bacteria such as faecalibacterium and bifidobacterium.

Blood samples from CFS patients showed higher levels of inflammatory markers such as c-reactive protein, intestinal fatty acid-binding protein, lipopolysaccharide, LPS-binding protein and soluble CD14.

“Taken together, our results suggest an ongoing damage to gut mucosa, leading to increased microbial translocation in CFS, which in turn could alter antimicrobial regulators and disregulate the innate immune system,” the researchers write in the journal Microbiome.

Based on this data, the researchers were able to correctly diagnose CFS in 83% of patients.

“Our detection of a biologic abnormality provides further evidence against the ridiculous concept that the disease is psychological in origin,” says lead researcher Professor Maureen Hanson.

Co-author Associate Professor Ruth Ley says the combination of blood tests and stool samples could complement other non-invasive diagnostic tools for the disease.

“But if we have a better idea of what is going on with these gut microbes and patients, maybe clinicians could consider changing diets, using prebiotics such as dietary fibres or probiotics to help treat the disease,” she says.

Sar’s comment: While this research takes into consideration the importance of gut flora; taking the correct species of flora to re-inoculate the gut and the association between damaged gut mucosa and chronic fatigue, it doesn’t consider the large range of other causes of chronic fatigue syndrome.

As no two people are alike, each person’s health should be assessed and treated on an individual basis. A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach should never be taken when it comes to your health, especially when it comes to the treatment of fatigue.

Nonetheless, this research confirms the significance of faecal testing and testing inflammatory markers in the blood, which I’ve been utilizing for many years to help clients identify the underlying cause of their fatigue. However, there are other tests which are equally, if not more, important which were not included in the research.

One major outcome of this research though was to help eliminate the incorrect typecasting that occurs to chronic fatigue sufferers as many doctors label their problems as ‘psychological’. They finally have hard evidence (blood inflammatory markers and faecal results) which proves that the condition is physiological and not ‘all in the mind!’
